Julie Newmar’s Dressing Table (2016)

This amazing picture of Julie Newmar was posted by hair stylist and make-up artist Louise Moon on her Instagram account. The iconic American actress, dancer and singer, who was the original Catwoman in the 1966 Batman tv show, was getting ready for a charity event.

wp-1474351062249.jpgThere’s a bottle of Erno Laszlo Shake It tinted treatment on her dressing table, on the left. This is a dual-phase skin-tone evener product with a matte finish.

wp-1474656313795.jpgThere’s also a tube of Duo eyelash glue, just behind the standing mirror.

Thanks to Ramón for the Laszlo id and Jennifer for the Duo one.

Yield to the Night (1956)

yieldtothenight_bornunicorn (3)Mary Price Hilton (Diana Dors) first meets Jim Lancaster (Michael Craig) at the perfume shop where she works as a shop assistant. He falls in love with her perfume, Christmas Rose. It’s a fictitious perfume, but I’ve found out some brands have launched fragrances with the same name. Thinking of Mary’s dreamy and idealistic personality, her perfume could be a floral with warm spicy notes.

yieldtothenight_bornunicorn (5)When the two meet at a club and dance, he comments again on her perfume, saying it’s “a wonderful smell.”

What real perfume do you think could be the fictitious Christmas Rose?

rimmel_moisturerenewlipstick_bornunicornJenna Marshall (Tammin Sursok) is a pro at applying lipstick flawlessly [1], despite her blindness. Mona (Janel Parrish) meets her at the Radley and doesn’t waste time: she harshly criticises her choice, “that Jungle Red [2].” The lipstick Jenna is wearing actually look good on her: it’s Rimmel Moisture Renew in Diva Red or Red Alert (I can’t decide which one).

[1] A similar scene happened in S01E05 (Reality Bites Me): in that case, Jenna and Hanna were in the same elevator.  Moreover, Mona pointing out that Jenna is wearing Jungle Red (which happens to be Alison’s favourite lipstick colour) could indicate she was the one who left the message on Spencer’s mirror in S01E04 (Can You Hear Me Now?).

[2] This shade has become paradigmatic of vivid blue red. First coined for the nail polish seen in The Women (1939) by George Cukor, it’s been turned into a real lipstick by François Nars.

Paris Is Burning (1990)

parisisburning_bornunicorn (2)

parisisburning_bornunicorn (3)One of the most emotional scenes of the film is when Pepper LaBeija, mother of the House of LaBeija, tells how her parents found out she dressed as a girl. Her mother found a fur coat in her closet and realised it was hers from the perfume on it, Jungle Gardenia.

tuvache_junglegardeniaOriginally launched by Tuvaché in the 1930, it became popular in the 1950s. Barbara Herman’s description of it is fascinating: “With tropical wet gardenia and bubble-gum sweet tuberose bursting from its center, flanked by fresh green top notes and an erotic base of balsams and musk, Jungle Gardenia goes straight to the perfume brain’s pleasure center.”

dermalogica_bornunicornThere are four Dermalogica products by the bath tub in the Hansson’s bathroom. Many products of this brand have the same packaging, so I’m just assuming here: the tall pump bottle is likely to be a body wash; the tube could be a scrub or a masque; the all-white product could be a deodorant. The one I’m 100% sure about is the metal pump bottle, which is a stress-relief treatment oil.

An American in Paris (1951)

anamericaninparis_bornunicorn (1)Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly) visits a perfume shop in Paris, where he first meets Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron), who works there as shop assistant.

lucienlelongsirocco_bornunicornschiaparelli_shocking_bornunicornIn the screencap above, three bottles of Lucien Lelong Sirocco and a giant bottle of Elsa Schiaparelli Shocking can be seen. Sirocco was launched in 1934, while Shocking – a creation by Jean Carles – was launched in 1937.

On the glass table on the left there’s Lucien Lelong Tailspin cologne; on the right counter, there’s a Guerlain flacon montre and there’s another one on the second shelf in the background. The first flacon montre is confusing because it contains a green liquid and has a golden disk on the front, so I guess it was a promotional factice. The second one has an orange disk, so it’s definitely Shalimar eau de cologne.

On the counter there are several Lelong fragrances: Orgueil, Balalaika cologne, Sirocco again and Balalaika eau de toilette. Orgueil was created by Jean Carles and launched in 1946; Balalaika was launched in 1939.

lucienlelong_openingnight_bornunicornTailspin cologne and Balalaika eau de toilette make another appearance, along with two beautiful fluted bottles of Indiscret, launched in 1936. The tiny bottle just under Gene Kelly’s chin is Opening Night, a box of which can be seen under the glass shelf. This fragrance was launched in 1935.

lucienlelong_parfumn_bornunicornThree bottles and boxes of Lucien Lelong Jabot can be seen on the bottom shelf of the counter, along with two bottles of Balalaika cologne and a bottle of Parfum N. This one could also be Parfum B, since they had the same bottle. Jabot was launched in 1939 and Parfum N in 1928.

lucienlelong_openingnightpyramid_bornunicornThe Lelong fest is not over yet: the red/white/blue box on the left, under Gene Kelly’s elbow, is Tailspin eau de parfum. The pyramid bottle next to the actor’s hip is Opening Night (Lelong loved using different bottles for the same fragrance).

clarins_eauressourcante_bornunicornThe cabinet in Tracy Legette’s bathroom is pretty interesting: there are three bottles of Guerlain Aqua Allegoria (two on the top shelf, another on the second one), some Essie nail polishes and Clarins Eau Ressourçante.

ballers_s02e02_bornunicorn (1)On the washbasin shelf there’s Yes To cucumber and eucalyptus liquid hand soap and Penhaligon’s Bayolea facial wash. This could also be the soothing gel or the cleansing mask (they have the same tube).
