Elizabeth Taylor’s Dressing Table (2011)

item13.rendition.slideshowHorizontal.elizabeth-taylor-bel-air-home-14A reader of this blog has recently asked me to write something about Elizabeth Taylor’s dressing table, as shown in a gorgeous photospread which appeared in the July 2011 issue of Architectural Digest. The American actress opened the doors of her Bel Air estate – a four-bedroom house on a wooded property – which she bought in the 1980s. The all-white room pictured above has a mirrored wall, a chest of drawers and a big desk.

Taylor was not only an incredibly famous actress and a humanitarian, but a businesswoman, too: she launched 13 perfumes – from Passion in 1988 to White Diamonds Lustre in 2014 – and most of them can be seen on her dressing table.

Gardenia, a polished white floral scent, was released in 2003.

Forever Elizabeth, a fruity/woody fragrance, was launched in 2002.

elizabethtaylor_blackpearls_bornunicornBlack Pearls, a warm woody scent, was released in 1996.

elizabeth-taylor-white-diamonds_bornunicornWhite Diamonds, one of the most popular perfumes by Taylor, was launched in 1991: its bottle had a beautiful egg shape topped by a crystal-studded bow.

elizabethtaylor_diamondandrubies_bornunicornI’m not sure about this id: the tall bottle in front of the mirror could refer to White Diamonds again (the most recent bottle) or to three fragrances launched in 1993 – Diamonds and Rubies, Diamonds and Emeralds, Diamonds and Sapphiresa homage to Taylor’s passion for fine jewellery. It’s interesting to see red, green and blue crystals in the bows topping the original bottles of these three scents.

Violet Eyes was launched in 2010. Its name is a reference to the peculiar colour of the actress’s eyes.

narscompact_bornunicornOn the table you can also see several mirrors, make-up brushes and products, among which Yves Saint Laurent glosses, NARS lipsticks and a couple of compacts.

liztaylor_boudoir_bornunicornThis close-up on the dressing table shows some of the most famous pieces of her massive jewellery collection: the Bulgari diamond and emerald necklace, bracelet and matching earrings (presents from Richard Burton), Cartier diamond and ruby earrings, bracelet and matching necklace (presents from Mike Todd), the Granny necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels (a gift from Burton in 1971), the diamond tiara Todd gave her in 1957, a Bulgari sapphire and diamond necklace (a present from Burton in 1969), the famous Serpenti watch by Bulgari.

laprairieskincare_bornunicornThere are some more make-up products: a set of Estee Lauder Pure Color eyeshadows (in the quirky cubes), four Tom Ford and four Dior lipsticks, plus some jars from La Prairie skincare line.

Sorry but all those diamonds have made me dizzy 😉 I’m in love with her dressing table: she wore her own perfumes until the end, which means she really felt them as part of her life, unlike most contemporary celebrities who launch perfumes but probably have never worn them once.

Karen Elson’s Beauty Spree (2014)

sisleyhydraglobal_bornunicornsisleyphytoblancmilk_bornunicornmarvistoothpaste_bornunicornKaren Elson has recently posted the picture of a shopping bag full of beauty products on her Instagram account, commenting: “I’m a beauty product junkie. Can’t help myself. I go in for one thing then come out with a bag full”. I totally feel you, Karen, so welcome to the beauty addict club. But let’s see what Miss Elson has bought: a bottle of Moroccanoil shampoo and a plethora of Sisley skincare products, among which full sizes of Hydra-Flash intensive hydrating mask, Hydra-Global intense anti-aging moisturizer and Phyto-Blanc lightening cleansing milk. In addition, there are samples of Global Perfect pore minimizerSisleÿa Global Anti-Age cream, Huile Precieuse a la Rose Noire face oil and Baume Efficace eye and lip contour balm. Last but not least, a box of Marvis toothpaste in Classic Strong Mint.

Lena Dunham’s Bathroom (2014)

IMG_6088.JPG

IMG_6089Yesterday Lena Dunham posted this picture on her Instagram account. She wore her pajamas and Allstate Foundation Purple Purse bag, a symbol of what the foundation does – supporting domestic violence survivors and the organizations that serve them. She snapped the picture in her bathroom and I couldn’t help but notice an empty Chanel no. 5 giant factice next to the wash-basin. This type of bottle is used in shops for display and it is filled with coloured water, but I think it’s nice to keep in a bathroom, too, especially if you’re a fan of that perfume. So does this mean Lena is a Chanel no. 5 wearer? I wouldn’t be surprised if she were.

Giancarlo Giammetti, the honorary president of Valentino fashion house, posted this picture on his Instagram account. An elegant dresser, made of marble, glass and steel, “hides” a collection of ties; next to a luxuriant orchid pot, some perfumes can be seen. It looks like he’s a Serge Lutens fan; he certainly loves L’Eau Froide (there are two bottles of it). I’ve also spotted a Jo Malone bottle and Valentino’s latest men’s fragrance, Valentino Uomo.

Jack Falahee’s Dressing Room (2014)

jackfalahee_instagram_bornunicorn

Jack Falahee, one of the protagonists of the legal drama tv show How to Get Away with Murder, posted this picture on his Instagram account. There are some notes from the costume department, plus a bottle of Kiehl’s Original Musk. This happens to be one of my favourite scents: it’s an awesome musky scent with neroli, rose, ylang-ylang and orange blossom notes. It’s definitely a sexy perfume, so I can totally see the American actor wearing it on the set.

Frances Bean Cobain’s Room (2014)

B1lKrLbCMAAXZgdToday Frances Bean Cobain posted this picture on her Twitter account. I obviously couldn’t help but notice the black bottle on the right, near the curtains. It’s the trademark black bottle of Robert Piguet products. This one is not a perfume, though, but a body lotion.

Does she wear Fracas, just like her mother? Uhm, I don’t think so, but it’s hard to tell from the picture. It looks like the trim around the front label is yellow. My guess it that she wears the Bandit body lotion. Sure, it could also be VisaGardénia or even Baghari, but I can totally see her wearing the body lotion of the chypré/leathery/animalic scent created by Germaine Cellier and launched in 1944.

Catherine D’Lish’s Dressing Table (2014)

catherinedlish_bornunicornThe striptease virtuoso Catherine D’Lish posted this picture on her Instagram account: she was sitting at her dressing table before a show, putting on her make-up and listening to music on her iPod.

lorealperfectmatch_bornunicorn lorealtruematch_bornunicorn lorealtruematchminerals_bornunicorn macmineralizeskinfinishnatural_bornunicornOn her table you can see L’Oreal products (Perfect Match and True Match liquid foundations, True Match Minerals mineral foundation) and MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural face powder.

macprolongwearlipcolour_bornunicornchanelcompact_bornunicornmac190sefoundationbrush_bornunicornI’ve also spotted MAC Pro Longwear lipcolour (probably in Lasting Lust), a Chanel black shiny compact and MAC 190SE foundation brush from the Heirlooms holiday collection released in 2007.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s Dressing Table (2014)

IMG_5612Jada Pinkett Smith has just posted this picture on her Facebook account. She’s started her day at 5.30 am, lots of press events for Gotham ahead.

mac_lipliner_bornunicorn bobbibrown_foundationstick_bornunicorn iman_stickfoundation_bornunicorn nars_compact_bornunicornI’ve spotted a MAC lip liner, foundation sticks and lots of NARS compacts (plus a paper bag) on her dressing table. The foundation sticks are black and gold, so I’m not sure if they’re by Iman or Bobbi Brown, since the two packagings are practically the same.

becca_compact_bornunicorn.jpg

dermalogica_agesmarthydramist_bornunicornThere are also a couple of Becca compacts and Dermalogica antioxidant face mist.

Thanks to my reader Jessica for the Becca and Dermalogica ids.
