Big Little Lies S02E06 (The Bad Mother)

Celeste (Nicole Kidman) is getting ready to go to court to fight her custody battle. She’s the only character in the show who’s consistently shown while putting make-up on. I think this is not coincidental: since S01 she’s shown as a trophy wife, a beautiful woman whose only task – according to her abusive husband – is staying beautiful and decorative. By showing her often applying make-up it’s like make-up is the gate through which she can reach her own self, but at the same time it’s a tool she uses to hide her real self, the battered and abused woman who stayed in a violent relationship for her children’s sake.

Among the products in her bathroom there are

Wet n Wild eye make-up remover

Chanel Perfection Lumière Velvet foundation

Charlotte Tilbury Magic foundationCharlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic blusher

The lipstick she uses is by NARS.

John Wick (2014)

One of the opening scenes is set in the protagonist’s bathroom. He’s standing alone in front of the mirror, but he’s looking at the other side of the counter, where many beauty products are. A close-up on this side shows us that it used to be Helen’s, his dead wife.

narslipsticks_bornunicornThere are other products around the washbasin, among which a small bottle of L’Occitane Verveine shower gel (old packaging) and a NARS lipstick.

Holy Smoke (1999)

holysmoke_bornunicorn (4)The sticker bearing the name of the shade on the bottom of the lipstick tube is hard to read, but it’s not difficult to guess it.

narsjungleredlipstick_bornunicornIn 1998/1999, when the film was produced, there weren’t many red shades in the NARS collection. Five years before, François Nars first marketed his lipsticks to Barneys: the small collection included two reds – Red Lizard (full-powered red) and Jungle Red (vivid blue red). It’s true the shade can’t be read on the bottom of the lipstick, but the lay-out of the name (the first word is longer than the second) points towards Jungle Red, inspired to a nail polish mentioned in The Women (1939) by George Cukor.

Lena Hall’s Dressing Room

lenahall_nars_bornunicornnarsschiap_bornunicornnarsfunnyface_bornunicornThe American actress and singer Lena Hall published this picture on her Instagram account. She was dressed as Yitzhak, one of the protagonists of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. She had this role in the musical’s revival on Broadway, thanks to which she won a Tony Award as Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 2014. In the picture she was holding a NARS lipstick and in the caption she mused: “Trying not to get caught by Hedwig!”. Now the point is: Schiap or Funny Face? What is the exact shade of that lipstick? It looks more the wonderfully fun fuchsia than the shocking matte pink inspired to Elsa Schiaparelli. What’s your guess?

Elizabeth Taylor’s Dressing Table

item13.rendition.slideshowHorizontal.elizabeth-taylor-bel-air-home-14A reader of this blog has recently asked me to write something about Elizabeth Taylor’s dressing table, as shown in a gorgeous photospread which appeared in the July 2011 issue of Architectural Digest. The American actress opened the doors of her Bel Air estate – a four-bedroom house on a wooded property – which she bought in the 1980s. The all-white room pictured above has a mirrored wall, a chest of drawers and a big desk.

Taylor was not only an incredibly famous actress and a humanitarian, but a businesswoman, too: she launched 13 perfumes – from Passion in 1988 to White Diamonds Lustre in 2014 – and most of them can be seen on her dressing table.

Gardenia, a polished white floral scent, was released in 2003.

Forever Elizabeth, a fruity/woody fragrance, was launched in 2002.

elizabethtaylor_blackpearls_bornunicornBlack Pearls, a warm woody scent, was released in 1996.

elizabeth-taylor-white-diamonds_bornunicornWhite Diamonds, one of the most popular perfumes by Taylor, was launched in 1991: its bottle had a beautiful egg shape topped by a crystal-studded bow.

elizabethtaylor_diamondandrubies_bornunicornI’m not sure about this id: the tall bottle in front of the mirror could refer to White Diamonds again (the most recent bottle) or to three fragrances launched in 1993 – Diamonds and Rubies, Diamonds and Emeralds, Diamonds and Sapphiresa homage to Taylor’s passion for fine jewellery. It’s interesting to see red, green and blue crystals in the bows topping the original bottles of these three scents.

Violet Eyes was launched in 2010. Its name is a reference to the peculiar colour of the actress’s eyes.

liztaylor_boudoir_bornunicornThis close-up on the dressing table shows some of the most famous pieces of her massive jewellery collection: the Bulgari diamond and emerald necklace, bracelet and matching earrings (presents from Richard Burton), Cartier diamond and ruby earrings, bracelet and matching necklace (presents from Mike Todd), the Granny necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels (a gift from Burton in 1971), the diamond tiara Todd gave her in 1957, a Bulgari sapphire and diamond necklace (a present from Burton in 1969), the famous Serpenti watch by Bulgari.

laprairieskincare_bornunicornThere are some more make-up products: a set of Estee Lauder Pure Color eyeshadows (in the quirky cubes), four Tom Ford and four Dior lipsticks, plus some jars from La Prairie skincare line.

Sorry but all those diamonds have made me dizzy 😉 I’m in love with her dressing table: she wore her own perfumes until the end, which means she really felt them as part of her life, unlike most contemporary celebrities who launch perfumes but probably have never worn them once.

Sofia Coppola’s bathroom cabinet.

I spy Caudalie, Kerastase, Dr. Hauschka, Valmont, Clarins, Mario Badescu, Bumble and Bumble, Joëlle Ciocco and Biologique Recherche products, plus NARS lipsticks, Diptyque Olene, Robert Piguet Fracas and Marc Jacobs perfume.
