Pedantic archivist of beauty products in films and tv shows

Confusi e felici (2014)

There are two fragrance bottles in Marcello’s bathroom.

The one with the gold stopper is a fragrance by L’Artisan Parfumeur (old packaging): the sticker on the bottle is unreadable but it’s pink, so it could be Jour de Fête, created in 2004 by Olivia Giacobetti.

The second bottle is unmistakable: it’s Hermès Terre d’Hermès, one of the masterpieces by Jean-Claude Ellena, launched in 2006.

Chambre 212 (2019)

There are some interesting beauty products in Maria and Richard’s bathroom.

In the glass cabinet there’s a small bottle of Chanel No. 5, a Diptyque candle box and Chanel Démaquillant Yeux Intense gentle biphase eye make-up remover in its box.

On a shelf by the mirror there are other two Chanel products. One is Chanel Pour Monsieur eau de toilette, created by Henri Robert and launched in 1955; the other is Hydra Beauty camellia night mask.

Margaret Thatcher’s Vanity

Photographer Herbie Knott took this portrait of Margaret Thatcher: she was at 10 Downing Street during the 1983 General Election campaign.

The gold bottle on the dresser is a pretty exciting object because it’s by Guerlain! This refillable spray canister with basketweave design was first introduced in 1982 for eaux de toilettes. Unfortunately it’s impossible to tell what fragrance it contained, but I think it was Mitsouko, the Guerlain classic which Thatcher was said to be a fan of.

Madonna’s God Control (2019)

In June 2019 Madonna released God Control, a music video directed by Jonas Åkerlund which is a ferocious attack against the violence that characterises American society and its strenuous defense of the Second Amendment.

In the screenshot above the singer is getting ready to spend a night out. On her mirrored vanity there are two interesting perfume bottles.

The bottle with clear stopper on the far left is Robert Piguet Fracas extrait de parfum, one of Madonna’s favourite fragrances, a white floral (tuberose and jasmine) triumph created by Germaine Cellier and launched in 1948.

Behind Fracas there’s Jean Patou Moment Suprême housed in the Vacances bottle – rounded stopper and three gadroons. This amber floral fragrance, created by Henri Almeras, was launched in 1929.

Mad Men S03E02 (Love Among the Ruins)

There’s Guerlain Shalimar in the beautiful flacon chauve souris on a dressing table in Peggy Olson’s bedroom.

Created in 1925 by Jacques Guerlain, it’s undeniably one of the most famous perfumes of all times. You may remember another protagonist of the TV show (Joan Holloway, played by Christina Hendricks) wears the same perfume.

KARD’s Ring the Alarm (2022)

The South Korean co-ed group KARD have recently released Re:, their fifth mini album. The first music video from the album, Ring the Alarm, features an interesting make-up product.

It’s a lipstick by the South Korean brand Dear Dahlia.

The lipstick doesn’t simply appear in the opening sequence: later in the video one of the members of the group, Jeon So-min, applies it on her lips.

Basic Instinct (1992)

Nick (Michael Douglas) is spending the night at Catherine’s so, when he goes into her huge bathroom, we know some intriguing products will be featured.

The first beauty product I’ve noticed is a spray can of Evian mineral water.

The tall pump bottle is Very Emollient body lotion by Alba Botanica. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find any picture of it online.

Next there’s a Clinique anti-perspirant roll-on deodorant.

This is a real treat: we get to see the fragrance used by Catherine! It’s Montana Parfum de Peau in the beautiful spiral bottle (a stunning design by Serge Mansau). This leather fragrance, created by Jean Guichard, was launched in 1986 and it still is one of the most aenigmatic scents of that decade; that is why I think it beautifully compliments the protagonist’s mysterious and wild personality.

The container on the far right is still a mystery: when I first saw it, I was sure it was part of the Parfum de Peau line (a body lotion or talcum powder), but it’s not. If you have any idea about its identity, please drop me a line.
