Yield to the Night (1956)

Mary Price Hilton (Diana Dors) works as a sales assistant at a perfume shop. There she meets Jim Lancaster (Michael Craig), the man she’ll desperately fall in love with. When they first meet, he’s looking for a fragrance, but asks Mary what she is wearing.

There are several bottles on the glass counter, among which Shalimar by Guerlain.

The spectacular giant chauve souris bottle gets a beautiful shot in the same scene.

On the bottom shelf of the counter there’s a set of Lucien Lelong mini bottles (see the ball-shaped stoppers) and what looks like Gardénia by the same brand. The bottle – designed by René Lalique and called Sea Star – was actually used for other perfumes by Lelong (Lilac, for example), but the white box trimmed in a contrasting colour could confirm it was Gardenia.

Another shot shows a flacon bouchon coeur and a flacon montre by Guerlain. Reading the labels is impossible, so I can’t tell what they contained. The same can be said for the trademark tall bottle by Lucien Lelong, which was used for different fragrances.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

When Dorothy and Lorelei get to Paris, they immediately go out shopping. One of the shops they hit is Guerlain. The screencap above shows the most famous fragrances of the French brand.

There are three flacons montres of Shalimar eau de cologne and two of Mitsouko eau de cologne.

There are five bouchon coeur bottles and two parquet boxes.

There are also two chauve souris bottles of Shalimar.

Last but not least, two flacons rayonnants of Vol de Nuit and three zebra-printed boxes.

Mr Selfridge S02 Opening Credits

Several perfumes appear in the opening credits of the 2nd season. First of all, some bouchon coeur flacons by Guerlain and their parquet boxes, originally introduced in the early 1910s for Mitsouko, Fol Arôme and L’Heure Bleue. The perfume in the box is the dabber version, while the two sitting on the counter are spray bottles.

The red-lined box contains three perfumes by Selfridges – Fumaria Bouquet, Selene and Adne. At the time, Selfridges sold their own perfumes, but I haven’t found any information about these, so I guess they are props. All the bottles have pump atomisers.

Here’s a closer look to Selene faceted bottle.

Some bottles of Lady Primrose diamond dusting silk shakers can be seen, too.

Last but not least: some glass jars of Lady Primrose Thyrst body crème.

The last image of the opening credits show Mr. Selfridge checking his watch, ready to welcome customers. Some Caron bottles can be seen in the glass display cabinet behind him.

Mr Selfridge S01E03

When Mr Selfridge decides to open a beauty counter in his store, we are treated with lots of eye candy! Fragrances and toiletries start to appear on the counters just before the entrance door.

In the screencap above, some bottles of Mäurer & Wirtz 4711 Original cologne can be seen, along with some round soaps by Roger & Gallet.

I’m not sure about the scents of the white and pink soaps, but they could be discontinued. As a matter of fact, their boxes and packaging could be coming from the 1980s, definitely not from the most recent collections. Contemporary Roger & Gallet soaps are wrapped in tissue paper, as usual, but they only have a round sticker – not a wrapping label.

Some flacons bouchon coeur by Guerlain can be seen on another counter. Most of them have no label, so it’s impossible to know what fragrances they contained. One thing is certain: their glass stoppers tell us they’re from before 1962, year in which plastic stoppers replaced the glass ones. As for the Mitsouko modern bottle, the pump atomizer is a nice way to give it a vintage feel.

Agnes Towler (Aisling Loftus) meets Henri Leclair (Grégory Fitoussi) in the beauty department. They have a short conversation about fragrances, from which we learn that Agnes is a classic British girl, who loves traditional creations like Yardley Lavender. The aromatic fougère, launched in 1919, is another historically inaccurate choice, but in this context it works.

Mr Selfridge S01E03

The dressing table of Rose Selfridge (Frances O’Connor) is quite busy. She’s clearly a fan of Guerlain perfumes: two flacons montre [1] can be seen on the shelf in front of the window, but there’s more. She opens a Guerlain box, decorated with people and animals, and takes out a flacon bouchon coeur, the bottle with the heart-shaped stopper designed by Raymond Guerlain in collaboration with Baccarat. It would be easy to assume this is Après l’Ondée, created by Jacques Guerlain in 1906, but it’s not, because that perfume has never had that bottle. It would have been a historically accurate choice (this episode takes place in 1909), but prop masters opted for something different. The flacon bouchon coeur originally contained three perfumes, released between 1912 and 1919.

Fol Arôme was created by Jacques Guerlain in 1912. Grace Hummel found a reference of this perfume being sold in 1896, so the 1912 version would be a reworked or relaunched perfume.

L’Heure Bleue was created by Jacques Guerlain in 1912. I don’t think this is the perfume seen on Rose’s dressing table because of the blue lettering on the central sticker.

The last possibility is Mitsouko, one of the most famous perfumes by the French brand. Another creation by Jacques Guerlain, it was launched in 1919, ten years after the time in which the tv show is set.

My guess is that the perfume seen in this episode is Fol Arôme, because the pale orange decorations on the sticker seem to match.

[1] The flacon montre was first released in 1936. The presence of these bottles in this episode is totally inaccurate, but no one can deny their decorative function.

Anaïs Nin (Maria de Medeiros) puts on some perfume. The bottle she holds is clearly the flacon bouchon coeur by Raymond Guerlain. The perfume she uses is Mitsouko, launched in 1919. It was her signature scent, along with Caron Narcisse Noir.

Romy Schneider’s Dressing Table (1973)

I’ve recently come across an extraordinary set of Romy Schneider’s pictures taken by photographer Helga Kneidl in 1973 in Paris. The Austrian actress was portrayed while sitting at her dressing table. Who knew she was a Guerlain fan? I shouldn’t be surprised: I’ve realized the fragrances of the French maison have always been incredibly popular among celebrities and prop masters (just think of all the Guerlain perfume sightings you can find on this site).

The first bottle I’ve spotted is the iconic Flacon Bouchon Coeur, designed by Raymond Guerlain and Baccarat and first released in 1912. It’s hard to tell what exact perfume was on the actress’ table, because this bottle has been used for Mitsouko, L’Heure Bleue, Fol Arome and a special edition of Shalimar.

There are also two Travel Flacons, first launched in 1955 to contain Ode and later used for several colognes. The bottles on Romy’s table have the white rim, so they surely contained feminine colognes.

Last but not least, on the right you can see a Flacon Montre with gold screw-cap stopper, first used in 1936 with Cachet Jaune. It contained all the standard feminine colognes, each of which was characterised by the colour of the central disk (red for Shalimar, navy blue for Vol de Nuit, burgundy for Jicky, light aqua for Chamade and so on). Unfortunately, the pictures I’ve found are black and white, so it’s impossible to tell which cologne Romy wore.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

There are two Revlon red nail polishes on the small shelf in front of the mirror on Holly Golightly’s dressing table.

On the table there’s a giant flacon bouchon coeur by Guerlain; there’s no label on it, so it’s impossible to know what fragrance it contains.

The small bottle with white stopper is Desert Flower, a Shulton fragrance launched in 1947.

The black tall bottle is a René Lalique creation housing D’Orsay Mystère, a chypre fragrance launched in 1915.

On the right side of the table there are four Lucien Lelong fragrances. The small bottle is Balalaika, launched in 1939; the tall bottle behind it is Sirocco, launched in 1934; the bottle with the bow-shaped stopper is Jabot, launched in 1939; the bottle in the blue box is Opening Night, launched in 1935.
