orangeisthenewblack_s01e06_bornunicorn (4)Piper (Taylor Schilling) has a conversation with Nicky (Natasha Lyonne) after meeting her mother. “Everybody has got problems,” she tells Nicky, who replies: “Sure, but some problems are worse than others.” “Yours,” she continues, “smell like Shalimar,” the perfume Piper’s mother wears. Nicky ironically comments on Piper’s complaining about her mother: she visits her in prisons, buys her pretzels and hugs her goodbye. There’s no reason to complain! Nicky’s bottom line is that Shalimar-scented problems are no problems at all.

Nicky, whose mother is a New York wealthy socialite, immediately recognizes Piper’s perfume. Who knows? Maybe her mother uses it, too. After all, the magic of the 1925 perfume created by Jacques Guerlain is undeniable.

Thanks to my Instagram friend Mustapha for pointing this out to me.

There are two Jean Patou fragrances on Vanessa’s dressing table: one is Joy, the other one is Eau de JoyLaunched in 1929 as “the world’s most expensive perfume,” Joy was created by Henri Alméras with 10600 flowers of jasmine and 28 dozens of roses, plus notes of ylang-ylang, musk, tuberose and sandalwood. Eau de Joy was launched in the 1960s: it’s dominated by jasmine notes, along with civet, aldehydes, lily of the valley and rose.

On the dressing table there are also a box of Summer Eye Cream by Germaine Monteil, still wrapped in plastic, and a bee-lid jar of Yardley face cream.

Thanks to vintageimagebox for the Yardley id.

ENDYMIONDEODORANT_bornunicornThe tall glass bottle contains bath oil; unfortunately, the label is not visible and the ribbon bow has been removed, so it’s impossible to give a precise id. Judging from the colour of the oil, it could be Lavandula, Artemisia, Cornubia (it would be perfect on Jed) or even the sadly discontinued Victorian Posy. On the other hand, the round tin box is from the Christmas 2013 collection, the contemporary version of Victorian music boxes, “interpreted as birdcages holding mechanical songbirds.” Again, it’s impossibile to tell what is inside. Last, there’s Endymion deodorant next to the tin box.

Laura Marinoni’s Dressing Table (2014)

lauramarinoni_bornunicorn

robertpiguet_bandit_bornunicornThere’s a bottle of Robert Piguet Bandit on the dressing table of the Italian actress Laura Marinoni, who starred as Merteuil in Quartett by Heiner Müller. The 1980 piece is an original take on the famous epistolary novel Les liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Merteuil and Valmont are the only characters who appear on stage.

Given the sensual atmosphere of the play, Bandit is such a great choice. Created by Germaine Cellier and launched in 1944, it’s a peculiar chypre fragrance with prominent notes of leather, aldehydes and oakmoss, blended with the animalic touch of civet.

The picture was taken by Rocco Talucci at the Piccolo Eliseo theatre in Rome in February 2014.
