The Last Days of Disco (1998)

thelastdaysofdisco_bornunicorn

guerlain_shalimarvintagecologne_bornunicornThere’s a bottle of Guerlain Shalimar eau de cologne (or eau de toilette) in the pharmacy where Alice gets some medicines. Even if it’s clearly stated that the story is set in the early 1980s, lots of details (especially costumes) reveal it’s actually a 1990s film. The presence of a footless chauve souris bottle is not historically accurate: it made its appearance in 1995 (three years before the film was directed), first used for the eau de toilette, later for the eau de cologne.

This is an example of “partial inconsistency,” in the sense that the perfume in question was not on the market at the time in which the story takes place, but it was at the time in which the film was shot.

Nicky ironically comments on Piper’s complaining about her mother: she visits her in prisons, buys her pretzels and hugs her goodbye. There’s no reason to complain! Nicky’s bottom line is that Shalimar-scented problems are no problems at all.

Nicky, whose mother is a New York wealthy socialite, immediately recognizes Piper’s perfume. Who knows? Maybe her mother uses it, too. After all, the magic of the 1925 perfume created by Jacques Guerlain is undeniable.

From the Countess’ remark we learn that Ramona wears Guerlain Shalimar and that her blood smells like walnuts. On the other hand, the Countess’ blood smells like black licorice.

Ramona’s perfume of choice doesn’t come as a surprise: created by Jacques Guerlain in 1925, this alluring perfume is among the most famous oriental fragrances. Its top notes include vanilla, leather, bergamot, lemon; the middle notes are jasmine, rose, vanilla, orris, patchouli, vetiver, incense, civet; the base notes are vanilla, tonka bean and musk.
