20th Century Women (2016)

20thcenturywomen_bornunicorn (5)ysl_opiumsecretdeparfum_bornunicornThere’s a suprising object on Dorothea’s writing desk – a bottle of Yves Saint Laurent Opium, the Secret de Parfum version. This is not the original 1977 perfume, created by  Jean Amic and Jean-Louis Sieuzac, but a later version, created by  Jean-Louis Sieuzac and launched in 1992. From a strictly historical point of view, this is an inaccurate choice, because the film is set in the late 1970s.

Stardust Memories (1980)

stardustmemories_bornunicorn (1)stardustmemories_bornunicorn (2)stardustmemories_bornunicorn (3)stardustmemories_bornunicorn (4)Dorrie (Charlotte Rampling) appreciates Sandy’s aftershave. Like a madeleine, that scent brings back memories from her childhood. Sandy (Woody Allen) gets the reference to À la recherche du temps perdu by Marcel Proust and jokingly comments he’s wearing Proustian Rush by Chanel. The reason why the French maison has never produced a perfume with such an evocative name is beyond me.

Kika (1993)

cacharel_louloudeodorant_bornunicornThere are three products from the Cacharel LouLou perfume line on Kika’s dressing table: the shortest bottle contains Lait de douceur body lotion, and the tallest one the perfume. The floral can in the middle of the table is the deodorant. No wonder so many products of the same line were selected: this perfume, created by Jean Guichard and launched in 1987, was hugely popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

angie-everhart-rive-gauche-yves-saint-laurent_bornunicornThe striped bottle in front of the mirror is Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, another iconic perfume, created by Michel Hy and launched in 1970.

Last but not least, some Kerastase Nutritive products (old packaging) can be seen on the far right of the table.

Saint Laurent (2014)

saintlaurent_bornunicorn (1)yslpourhomme_bornunicorn

yslpourhommecampaign_bornunicornThe first men’s perfume by Yves Saint Laurent was Pour Homme, an aromatic scent launched in 1971. Its advertising campaign – the designer posing naked in front of the camera of Jean Loup Sieff – challenged the concept of male nudity in advertising and caused a scandal.

e198e9f289c1468a26cff0d91041252fThe same concept was used by Tom Ford in 2002: the advertising campaign of YSL M7 featured the martial arts champion Samuel de Cubber naked.

Tutti i colori del buio (1972)

GuerlainCleansingOil_bornunicornThe white matte bottle with the gold cap on the right is a vintage skincare product by Guerlain – a cleansing milk, to be precise.
