The French Line (1953)

Mame Carson (Jane Russell) is a millionairess with an oil empire and an unlucky love life. In the first part of the film she’s still engaged, though, and in the first musical act she’s getting ready to meet his fiancé. She likes wearing working clothes but her boudoir shows her love for furry rugs, velvet and satin furniture and perfumes! There’s an impressive display of bottles on her vanity.

The first bottle which appears in this scene is in the bathroom, where Mame’s maid, Clare (Theresa Harris) is spraying some fragrance.

On a marble counter behind Clare there’s a Guerlain flacon montre of Shalimar (see the orange red disk).

Mame takes a bubble bath, then gets changed behind the vanity mirror.

Starting from left bottom I’ve spotted a flacon quadrilobe by Guerlain, Lucien Lelong Sirocco and Bourjois Mais Oui.

On the second shelf there are Guerlain Shalimar in the flacon chauve souris and another Guerlain fragrance in the flacon bouchon coeur.

On the top shelf there are two unknown bottles, while the one in the middle is Guerlain Sous le Vent in the beautiful flacon tonnelet.

Last, there’s the unique pyramid-shape bottle of Lucien Lelong Opening Night on a shelf on the left.

revlonvintagelipstick_bornunicornguerlainjicky_bornunicornThere are some Revlon lipsticks (with the ivory and gold case) on Midge’s counter. On a shelf nearby there’s a Guerlain flacon quadrilobe: impossible to say what scent it contains.

revlon_vintagenailpolish_bornunicornThe other make-up products on the counter are by Revlon but I couldn’t identify any of them. Some are original (see the Paint the Town Pink box) but the others seem generic items with the label Revlon on them. I couldn’t find any evidence that Revlon nail polish had ever had those bottles, for example, and the same can be said for the black and red compacts. This leaves me a bit perplexed. If Revlon allowed the production of the tv show to use its name, why didn’t they provide original vintage items?

Lying with You (2017)

lyingwithyou_bornunicornThe latest music video by Charlotte Gainsbourg – Lying with You, from the album Rest – turns out to be an unexpected perfume lover mecca. Directed by Gainsbourg herself, it’s set in the apartment at 5 bis Rue de Verneuil (Paris) where her father, Serge Gainsbourg, lived. Soon to become a museum, it’s filled with objects that the French artist used and loved; among them, a massive amount of perfumes and toiletries.

guerlaingoutteflacon_bornunicornThe drop-shaped bottle is the flacon goutte by Guerlain. It was used for different perfumes, so it’s impossible to tell which one it contains.

lancomemagienoire_bornunicornThere’s also a bottle of Lancôme Magie Noire, created by Gerard Goupy in 1978.

Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme eau de toilette 100 ml spraySerge Gainsbourg’s signature perfume – Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme – is featured too. It was created in 1978 by Louis Monnet.

guerlain_mitsouko_bornunicornPlus, four flacons quadrilobes and flacons bouchon coeur.

lyingwithyou(2)_bornunicornLastly, there’s a vintage bottle of Garnier Birkin shampoo (or hair lotion). I wonder if Gainsbourg actually used it or just kept a bottle as a homage to his partner (and Charlotte’s mother) Jane Birkin.

Thanks to Vincent Legrudge for the Guerlain ids.
