revlon blacberry nail polishThe protagonist, Lucille Vinson (Melanie Griffith), goes to Las Vegas and – beginner’s luck – wins a lot of money at the casino. She gets a make-over, which includes a glamourous haircut and a professional manicure. The nail polish they use at the salon is by Revlon. The bottle is from the 1980s, so it’s not historically accurate, since the film is set in 1965.

zpalette_bornunicornThere are lots of make-up products in Chanel Oberlin’s dressing table drawer. From left to right: there is a MAC 190 foundation brush, along with Dior Diorshow Maximizer lash plumping serum in the white tube, L’Oreal Color Riche eyeshadow quad (the shade could be Cupa Joe #839 or Because You’re Worth It! #841), two Stila Lip Glaze glosses, a MAC lip liner and a black Z Palette with depotted blushes and eyeshadows.

macslimshine_bornunicornChuck Charles (Anna Friel) is wearing a MAC Slimshine lipstick.

I asked David De Leon (the show’s make-up artist) if he remembered the exact shade, but he didn’t. The episode aired on October 8th, 2008, so it was shot some months earlier; MAC launched Slimshine lipsticks in 16 shades in May 2007: we can assume one of those first shades was used on the actress. My guess is Pink d’Lush, described as bright pink-coral.

manhunter_bornunicorn (4)When Will Graham (William Petersen) visits Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox) in prison, the doctor doesn’t miss out on commenting on his perfume. Thanks to his exceptional sense of smell, he knows Will is wearing the “atrocious aftershave” he wore in court three years before, something which “has a ship on the bottle”, that is Old Spice.

manhunter_bornunicorn (5)

manhunter_bornunicorn (6)Soon after commenting on the aftershave, Hannibal moves the conversation on a more personal level. Will is the one who caught Lecktor: despite appearances, they’re “just alike”, which excites Hannibal and scares Will. The doctor goes on: “You came here to look at me, to get the old scent back again”, referring to the thrill of being able to enter someone’s mind and think like him/her, something that Will does, being an empath.

manhunter_bornunicorn (7)When Will leaves the cell in a hurry, Hannibal is disappointed: his remark (“Smell yourself”) is spiteful but also refers to Will’s power. To get “the old scent back again”, he just has to smell himself, to look inside of himself.

The same conversation appears in Hannibal S03E09.

There’s a satin glass bottle of Yardley Lace in Lol and Woody’s bedroom. I’ve always wondered what fragrance the former-skinbyrd-turned-lunchlady wears, and now we have an answer. According to Fragrantica, this fragrance, originally launched in 1964, is built on three notes – aldehydes as top notes, rose as heart notes and wood and oakmoss as base notes. It sounds like a very feminine and romantic scent, something which definitely appeals to Lol’s sentimental side. This specific bottle could be the 1982 formula, created by Dominique Ropion, or even a more recent version, since this perfume is still available in shops.

Thanks to Stephan Matthews and Jane Daly for the id.
