The Last Showgirl (2024)

Despite the constant off-focus quality that characterises most of the scenes set in the dressing room of the Razzle Dazzle revue show, some clearer shots give us the chance to see what products sit on the vanities of the showgirls. Not surprisingly, some of them are vintage items, a detail that reinforces the strong divide between past and present analysed in the film.

The white tin bottle is Nestlé Egyptian Henna neutral natural conditioner.

The round tin box is a classic – Max Factor theatrical face powder.

Later in the film we can see a can of Kenra volume hairspray (not a vintage product).

Coty Airspun loose face powder in the round cardboard box is another classic.

Jane Birkin’s Bathroom (1987)

This beautiful portrait was taken by Richard Melloul in the bathroom of Birkin’s house in rue de la Tour, in Paris. You may recognise it as the bathroom which appears in Kung Fu Master! (1988) by Agnès Varda. Some of the perfumes and toiletries in this picture can also be found in the film.

On the left side of the marble shelf above the washbasin there’s a jar of Gessy brilliantine, which I found no picture of.

Next there’s a bottle of Coty cologne. The front label cannot be read, but considering it has a white stopper, it could be Le Muguet.

A bottle that can be seen in Kung Fu Master! is Chanel 8°5 Lotion Fraiche.

There’s also Guerlain Vol de Nuit in the gorgeous flacon rayonnant. This is a 1933 fragrance by Jacques Guerlain.

On the far right side of the marble counter there are several round boxes, possibly containing face or body powders. Among them, there are Les Météorites pressed-powder pearls and Coty Airspun loose face powder, both seen in the Varda film.

On the right side of the marble counter there are several skincare products. Among them, I can see a white jar and a white tube by Clarins (impossible to know what they contained) and Guerlain body creme.

The last product I have been able to identify is a massive flacon goutte by Guerlain, sitting on a wooden counter above the bath tub. First introduced in 1923, it was used for over 30 different fragrances, so there’s no way to tell exactly what this bottle contained.

Kung-fu Master! (1988)

There are some interesting items on a marble counter on Mary-Jane’s bathroom.

The miniature bottle on the left is Chanel 8° 5 Lotion Fraiche.

The tall cardboard box on the right contains Manetti & Roberts Borotalco, probably the most iconic talcum powder made in Italy.

In front of it, another cardboard box contains Coty Airspun loose face powder.

Riverdale S06E04 (The Witching Hour[s])

Poppy Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) is one of the protagonists of this episode, inspired to The Hours (2002) by Stephen Daldry, based on the novel with the same title by Michael Cunningham. Her storyline is set in the 1950s: she’s an independent woman who practices the arts of magic, through which she tries to help the women of Rivervale trapped in unhappy or boring lives.

She holds beauty lessons in her own mansion, so it’s interesting to see what’s included in her kit.

In the round train case there’s a box of Coty Airspun loose face powder.

The lipstick she puts on a red lacquered tray is Color Riche by L’Oreal.

The red nail polish bottles she puts on gold standing mirrors are from the Color Riche line by L’Oreal.

Maria’s Lovers (1984)

There are two interesting products on the mantelpiece in the room where the protagonist (Nastassja Kinski) is getting ready.

The first is a perfume box by Dana. The name of the perfume is impossible to read: I believe it’s Tabu, the legendary “parfum de puta” created by Jean Carles and launched in 1932. The film is set in 1946, though, so the box could contain other Dana perfumes – the chypre fruity 20 Carats (1933), the amber Emir (launched in 1935) and the floral Chantilly (1941).

The other product is a round cardboard box of Coty Airspun loose face powder.

More products can be seen thanks to a close-up.

The two jars with pink lids contain Woodbury skin cream.

There are three boxes of Coty Airspun loose face powder: the classic version has the yellow box, while the peach box contains a perfumed version (the scent in this case is L’Aimant).

Another shot shows us the far left side of the counter, where there’s another table display. This time the product is Woodbury lanolin-rich hand cream.
