How to Get Away with Murder S03E01 (We’re Good People Now)

A lot has changed in Annalise Keating’s life since the show started, including her perfume. You may remember a bottle of Cartier Eau de Cartier was sitting on her dressing table in the first season. Now she has opted for something different – Vera Wang. Created by Jean-Claude Delville and Harry Fremont, it was launched in 2002; it’s a white floral perfume, with notes of lily, gardenia, lotus and lily of the valley.

The tall green bottle on the right is Elizabeth Arden Refining Toner lotion, a product now discontinued.

Thanks to Jennifer for both ids.

Mr Selfridge S03 Opening Credits

guerlain_flaconabeilles_bornunicornSeveral perfumes can be seen in the opening credits of the 3rd season. The first is the spectacular flacon géant abeille dorée by Guerlain: originally created for the Eau de Cologne Impériale and made by Pochet et du Courval, it’s decorated by 69 golden bees painted in gilded enamel.

The second is the Arlington cologne by D. R. Harris & Co., a London brand founded in 1790 at No. 11 St. James’s Street. At the time, Harris’s Apothecary sold Lavender Water, Classic Cologne and English Flower perfumes.

The Crown S01E05 (Smoke and Mirrors)

thecrown_s01e05_bornunicorn-1When the Duke of Windsor (Alex Jennings) is interviewed by a magazine reporter, he opens the doors of his private rooms. Four perfumes and a soap can be seen among his toiletries.

floris_cefirosoap_bornunicornThe “good, well-milled soap” in the silver soap dish is by Floris. The first perfume on the left is by the same brand, which received the first Royal Warrant in 1820.

floris_specialno127_bornunicornReading the perfume label is impossible, but I’m pretty sure it could be Special N°127, a fragrance that the Duke of Windsor wore. Created in 1890 for Russia’s Grand Duke Orloff, it was originally named Orloff Special, but later renamed after the page in the ‘Specials’ formula book which the recipe was recorded in. It was regularly used by Eva Peron and Winston Churchill.

geoftrumper_spanishleathercologne_bornunicornThe second bottle from the left is Spanish Leather cologne by Geo F. Trumper, another historical London brand, established in the late 19th century by George Trumper, operating from a shop at 9 Curzon Street, in Mayfair.

penhaligons_blenheimbouquet_bornunicornThe other two bottles are by Penhaligon’s. The one with the grey ribbon bow is Blenheim Bouquet: created in 1902, it was one of Winston Churchill’s favourite fragrances.

The one with the dark red ribbon bow is Hammam Bouquet, created in 1872 and inspired by the scent of the Turkish Baths on Jermyn Street, Piccadilly.

Thanks to my friend Raffy for telling me about this scene and for identifying the Floris soap.

hannibal_s01e05_jar_bornunicorn (4)Bella Crawford (Gina Torres) is a very elegant woman, so no wonder she wears an “exquisite” and exclusive perfume. Dr. Lecter’s description is a clear reference to its name: it’s “similar to the aroma on the air just after lightning strikes,” an elaborate nod to JAR Bolt of Lightning.

jar_boltoflightining_bornunicornCreated by Joel Arthur Rosenthal and launched in 2001, it features tuberose and green notes. JAR perfumes are famous for not containing “the typical top, middle, and base notes,” as explained on the WGSN Insider blog. “Rather, they blend together for an unpredictable release. The Bolt of Lightning fragrance takes 10 minutes to develop on the skin.”
