Pedantic archivist of beauty products in films and tv shows

Island of Lost Souls (1932)

There are many generic perfume bottles on Lota’s dressing table, but there’s one which cannot be ignored.

It’s the wonderful flacon bouchon coeur by Guerlain! Designed by Raymond Guerlain in collaboration with Baccarat, it was originally created to house extraits of three fragrances by Jacques Guerlain – L’Heure Bleue (1912), Fol Arôme (1912) and Mitsouko (1919).

All of them were already on the market when the film was made, but which one was so popular in the U.S.A. to appear as a prop in a controversial [1] science fiction horror film? I would personally go with Mitsouko.

The two atomisers on the left are by DeVilbiss.

[1] The film, violent and gruesome, was heavily censored for years.

Thanks to Ramón Jurado for submitting this post and to Caroline Louise for the DeVilbiss id.

Chanson douce (2019)

Mila (Assya Da Silva) and her nanny Louise (Karin Viard) standing in the bathroom give us a chance to take a look at the busy shelf by the mirror.

The perfume bottle on the far left is Hermès Un Jardin après la Mousson, a warm spicy eau de toilette created by Jean-Claude Ellena and launched in 2008.

Several products are by Estée Lauder: the first is Sumptuous Extreme mascara.

The second is Double Wear Nude foundation.

Another brand Myriam (Mila’s mother) likes is La Roche-Posay. The white tube on the left is Hydreane Extra Riche thermal spring water cream.

The aqua jar with gold cap is another Estée Lauder product – DayWear Matte oil-control anti-oxidant moisture gel creme.

Moving to the right side of the shelf, we can see a bottle of Weleda toning lotion.

Next, a spray bottle of La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF30 sunscreen.

Last, the white tube is La Roche-Posay Lipikar anti-dryness body milk.

Right in the centre of the shelf there’s Chanel Rouge Allure lipstick. It’s a very personal item, but Louise doesn’t think twice before wearing it.

Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

When Bee washes herself up, we can see a couple of Glossier products in the bathroom.

The first is a bottle of You, a floral powdery fragrance created by Dora Baghriche and Frank Voelkl and launched in 2017.

The second is a tube of Cloud Paint seamless cheek colour, possibly in Spark, a bright poppy shade.

Thanks to Alessandra for submitting this post.

Helter Skelter (2012)

Ririko (Erika Sawajiri) is almost hitting rock bottom of her stellar career. The multiple cosmetic surgeries she’s had have disfigured her and there’s nothing she can do to turn back time. Her make-up artist is able to cover the bruises and spots on her skin but it’s a temporary solution.

Among the many beauty products on her dressing table, there’s the beautiful opaline pump bottle of Yves Saint Laurent Paris body lotion.

When the camera moves, a Chanel compact is visible, too.
