Pedantic archivist of beauty products in films and tv shows

Priscilla (2023)

What does it take to become a beauty icon? Judging from the opening scene of the film, lots of work. Priscilla meticulously applies black eyeliner in a perfect cat-eye shape and that is just the beginning of a strict routine that her over-controlling partner imposes on her.

The eyeliner in question is Guerlain Mad Eyes intense eyeliner in Glossy Black. It’s not a historically accurate choice but in Sofia Coppola’s cinematic world this has never been a problem.

When the trailer of the film was first released, lots of online discussions focused on the brand of the false eyelashes she wears. Now we can confirm the brand  Shirley Joyce doesn’t exist, so this object is simply a prop.

Her lipstick is not a prop, though: the one she wears is by Chanel.

The black glossy case appearing in the film is not historically accurate because in the 1960s Chanel lipstick had slightly different details in gold metal.

The finishing touch on her trademark beehive updo is Rayette Aquanet hairspray. Lots of it!

Bound (1996)

Violet (Jennifer Tilly) is a woman who is looking for a way out of a dangerous situation: her boyfriend is a money launderer for the mafia, so she wants to make a new life for herself with the help of Corky, her fascinating ex-con neighbour.

Her femme fatale look features dark red lipstick: the one she’s applying in the screencap above is by MAC (old packaging).

The make-up brushes sitting on her mirrored dressing table are by MAC, too.

The squared bottle with black stopper on a glass shelf in the bathroom is a Chanel liquid foundation.

May December (2023)

The blush in stick form that Gracie (Julianne Moore) is holding is by ILIA.

She also uses Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin foundation.

The lip colour Gracie applies on Elizabeth is the Divine lip & cheek duo by Lilah B.

Quiz Lady (2023)

Jessica (Sandra Oh) turns the ordinary life of her sister Anne around when she moves in with her. Jessica doesn’t have a job, sleeps until late and is very serious about skincare.

Her beauty kit includes City Beauty line-smoothing hydro masks, a green jade roller, Anomaly dry shampoo and Kahi bounce balm.

This last product gets a special mention when the two sisters are in Philadelphia. They are sharing a hotel room and Jessica offers Anne the anti-wrinkle balm saying “it’s Korean”, which usually means innovation and quality.

The Killer (2023)

The opening credits feature a very brief moment in which some beauty products and fragrances appear on screen.

The gloved hand of the Killer is holding a bottle of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle. But this is neither the eau de parfum nor the eau de toilette, because the name of the product is printed in black on white paper. I believe the prop masters used the bottle of the Eau de Parfum Intense (bottle and stopper made of clear glass) and replaced the neck sticker, which is in this case gold with white stripes, with the one from the Eau Privée version, which is white with gold stripes.

In the background we can see a bottle of Caudalie Vinoperfect concentrated brightening essence.

The bottle on the right is supposed to be part of the Replica series by Maison Margiela. The bottle is the same, but the front label has been replaced (a different font has been used for the word Replica, for example), even though it still bears the name of the original product.
