After performing at a ball, Pray Tell (Billy Porter) sits at his dressing table and removes his make-up.
The frosted glass bottle with gold stopper is a fragrance by Officina Profumo S. Maria Novella. Too bad we can’t say what scent it is.
There’s also a Hydrabase lipstick by Chanel.
There’s a Christian Dior houndstooth splash bottle on Helen’s vanity, but unfortunately the front label is never clearly visible. It looks white with a touch of pink, but it could be just a lighting trick. In any case, this bottle was used to contain eaux de toilette and eaux de cologne, so many possibilities open up. I think we should follow one lead, though: what vintage Dior perfume could appeal to an elegant working girl like Helen? We don’t know a lot about her background, so this bottle could be something she received from her mother or grandmother, or she could have bought it for herself. I personally think she would wear a classic, so either Diorissimo or Miss Dior.
There’s another classic product on the vanity – a Chanel lipstick.
And what about the blue glass bottles (four of them!)? They remind me of Neal Yard’s products (the film is set in London, so it would be a logical choice), but I found no evidence the brand used these bottles in the 1990s.
If you, like me, are a fan of Isabelle Huppert, you’ll be delighted to see this backstage picture, taken on April 15th, 2019 at the Linda Gross Theater in New York. For roughly two months the French actress performed as the Mother in the namesake play by Florian Zeller, under the direction of Trip Cullman.
From left to right there are:
Dove spray deodorant
Avène Hydrance Optimale light hydrating cream
By Terry Terrybly Densiliss foundation
Two Chanel lipsticks
Estee Lauder Double Wear liquid foundation
NARS blush and loose face powder
As a die-hard fan of Diptyque, I must admit I jumped on my chair when I saw an eau de toilette bottle on Isabelle’s table. I’m not 100% sure of my id because the front label is partially hidden, but my guess is that she uses Do Son, a tuberose fragrance created in Fabrice Pellegrin and launched in 2005.
Next to the Diptyque bottle there’s a Serge Lutens fragrance. In this case, it’s impossible to tell what it is.
There are also two items that not beauty-related but are very nice: a small jar of Tiger Balm (one of my staples) and a tin box containing Gommose Leone, delicious Italian liquorice gummy candy.
Thanks to Scentimentalist for the foundation id.
There are two lipsticks on Ilana Mather’s dressing table: the one with the golden case is Pure Color by Estee Lauder; the one with the black and gold case is by Chanel.
The gold jar contains another Estee Lauder product – the face cream Re-Nutriv.
Thanks to Bunny Hoover for the cream id.
There’s a spray bottle of Avène thermal spring water and two Chanel lipsticks – Rouge Coco and Rouge Allure – on the dressing table of Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche).
The scene set in the make-up and perfume department at Marshall Fields is filled with eye candy.
At the Lancôme counter, a customer is trying one of the brand’s most famous fragrances, Trésor. Created by Sophia Grojsman and launched in 1990, it’s a warm floral-oriental perfume. Several bottles of body lotion and a jar of body cream are on display.
At the Chanel counter, there’s a display of the Rouge Hydrabase lipsticks.
At the Estee Lauder counter there are some nail polishes on display.
There are several make-up items in Emily’s bag: a Chanel lipstick (it could be the Rouge Coco or the Rouge Coco Shine, since the two products have the same tube), a purple nail polish by OPI, L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse lip colour and a Claire’s lipstick (with a slightly different packaging).
There’s also a tube of Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick.
Thick eyeliner flicks were among her most notable trademarks. She probably experimented with several products, but in the picture above she was using Rimmel Exaggerate liquid eyeliner.
I love this picture, where Amy was shopping for nail polishes at a drugstore. She selected a couple of red shades from the Mavala display. The tiny bottles and the wide colour selection make the Swiss brand one of my favourites.
The connection between Amy and Chanel became clear when Karl Lagerfeld sent his models sporting thick eyeliner and beehives on the runway of the Métiers d’Art pre-fall 2008 collection. Amy had her own unique style but she liked Chanel bags and make-up. In the picture above, she was putting on some Chanel lipstick in a bright pink shade.
In a photoshoot she did with Elina Kechicheva for Jalouse on January 25th, 2008, she was holding a Chanel black compact containing Double Perfection Lumière foundation and a Chanel Le Crayon Lèvres lip pencil in a pink nude shade.
