One of the most striking elements of Jane Hudson’s look is her make-up. Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) invented it, taking inspiration from the concept of the “broken doll”, so important in the aesthetic of the 1962 Robert Aldrich film Feud is based on.

In the memoir This ‘N That, Bette Davis explained she imagined Jane as someone who would never wash her face, just put on another layer of make-up. The bright lips, caked white face make-up and the heart-shaped beauty mark all have a part in achieving the iconic result, not to mention the curly blonde wig, used by the other protagonist of the film (Joan Crawford) in an old movie.

The lipstick Bette applies is by Bésame Cosmetics, a bright orange-based red. My guess is that the shade could be Red Hot Red, described as “classic engine red,” a bold and brazen warm red.

After getting a bootleg tape of a Grandmaster Flash’s live performance, the Kiplings decide to play it at a party they organize at Adele’s, the hairdresser’s shop of their parents. Among the products seen in the shop, there are Thayers rose petal witch hazel toner, Tres Flores brilliantine and Pinaud Clubman after-shave lotion.

The haircare products on the bottom shelf are by Sta-Sof-Fro: the tall bottles are activators from the Curl line, while the tube is Rub On hair and scalp conditioner.

Behind the Scenes of the 2017 Vanity Fair Oscar Party: Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon didn’t walk the Oscars red carpet this year, but was among the guests of the Vanity Fair Oscar party, which took place at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. The actress, who wore a lovely Michael Kors Collection dress, posted a picture of her dressing table on her Instagram stories. Let’s see what was on it.

On the back of the table there’s Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow face primer.

Right in front of it there are two Natura Bissé products from the C+C Vitamin line – the serum and the cream – and a can of Evian water spray.

The silver eyeshadow in the black compact is Chanel Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch in #97 Infini.In front and next to it there are two NARS eyeshadow. The duo is probably Bellissima, while the single is the Dual Intensity in Sycorax. There’s a NARSissist eyeshadow palette, too.

There’s a jar of Chantecaille Future Skin foundation next to the NARS palette.

The last eyeshadow palette is 5 Couleurs by Christian Dior in #506 Parisian Sky.

Next to the Chanel eyeshadow, on the left, there’s a Make Up For Ever metal palette.

The colourful tubes are a brand-new cheek colour by Glossier, which debuted yesterday on some celebrities. Molly R. Stern, Reese’s make-up artist, used the shade Dusk.

Last but not least, two NARS blushes in neutral colours.

Thank God for Instagram and make-up artist accounts on a night like the Oscars night! Lots of pictures from the dressing rooms of celebrities were posted tonight, but the ones which really caught my eye came from Rachel Goodwin’s account. The NARS director of Pro Artistry and Red Carpet for North America, who describes herself as “ice cream aficionado and all around beauty seeker,” was behind the lovely look seen on Emma Stone, winner as Best Actress in a Leading Role for La La Land by Damien Chazelle.

She mostly used NARS products – Illuminator in Hot Sand, Radiant creamy concealer (I guess in Chantilly), Dual-Intensity blush in Frenzy. The bronzer on the right is NARS Sweep Sun Wash diffusing bronzer in Seaside (available for Spring 2017) and the tiny bottle on the left (liquid tint or liquid blush?) is surely another upcoming product.

On the table there are two Sisley products – Black Rose cream mask and White Ginger contouring oil for legs; there’s a Sisley blush brush, too. Last but not least, we get to know the PERFUME she used – Diptyque Do Son eau de parfum! This fragrance, created by Fabrice Pellegrin, is a sunny and creamy blend of tuberose, orange leaves, pink peppercorn and musk.

The strongest detail of this Gabriel Dante Rossetti-inspired look was the bold lip colour. Rachel used NARS Audacious lipstick in Mona, a beautiful mahogany tone. The lip liner she used was Karekare. This beautifully complimented her gold embroidered dress, a haute couture creation by Givenchy.

Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is putting a red lipstick on. Her mother Alice (Mädchen Amick) is not happy with her choice and name-checks the shade of the lipstick Betty is wearing.

The lipstick also gets a shot of its own: it’s Seduce Scarlet from the Colorlicious lipstick collection by Covergirl.

Betty, who’s using her sister Polly’s lipstick, tries to explain why she’s wearing it: it makes her feel powerful, but she can’t convince her mother. Alice takes the lip colour away with a tissue and offers another option.

The rigged gold tube she reaches for is definitely a vintage lipstick, possibly by Avon, which still has a Pink Perfection shade in its collection.

Kitty Hawkins (Amy Beth Hayes) has got some Guerlain parquet boxes on her counter. First launched in the 1910s, this box contained Mitsouko, Fol Arôme and L’Heure Bleue in their bouchon coeur bottles. In this scene, the boxes are never opened, so it’s impossible to tell what they contain.

Claire Gregory (Mimi Rogers) and Mike Keegan go shopping at a luxury department store. She’s an habitual customer, so she greets the sales assistant sitting at the perfume counter.

Among the several bottles on the counter, I’ve spotted a Chanel perfume in three sizes, a giant bottle of Jean Desprez Bal à Versailles eau de cologne and a giant Caron bottle. I can only assume the Chanel perfume is no.5, but the same bottle has been used for other fragrances.

One bottle of Ungaro Diva makes its appearance, too. In the background, on the right, a giant bottle of a Jean Patou perfume can be seen. It’s unclear whether it’s Joy or 1000, because the two perfumes have the same bottle.

Several medicine bottles can be seen in Bonnie’s bathroom cabinet, along with a perfume bottle – Elizabeth Arden Untold, a fruity floral perfume created by Clement Gavarry and launched in 2013. It’s quite surprising that such a hard character wears such a girly perfume, but the ways in which we choose perfumes are often inscrutable.
