The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel S01E05 (Doink)

revlonvintagelipstick_bornunicornguerlainjicky_bornunicornThere are some Revlon lipsticks (with the ivory and gold case) on Midge’s counter. On a shelf nearby there’s a Guerlain flacon quadrilobe: impossible to say what scent it contains.

revlon_vintagenailpolish_bornunicornThe other make-up products on the counter are by Revlon but I couldn’t identify any of them. Some are original (see the Paint the Town Pink box) but the others seem generic items with the label Revlon on them. I couldn’t find any evidence that Revlon nail polish had ever had those bottles, for example, and the same can be said for the black and red compacts. This leaves me a bit perplexed. If Revlon allowed the production of the tv show to use its name, why didn’t they provide original vintage items?

lanvinarpege_tallbottle_bornunicornWhile Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) is walking through the beauty department at B. Altman, we get a glimpse of two factice bottles. The tallest one is Rochas Madame Rochas; the one with the squared black stopper is an eau by Lanvin (it could be either Arpege or My Sin).

florisroyalarmsdiamondedition_bornunicornTwo different Floris perfumes can be seen on the counter in the cosmetics department – one has a red label, the other has a purple one. Both of them are limited editions.

The first – Amaryllis – was launched in 2010 as part of the brand’s Private Collection; the second – Royal Arms Diamond Edition – was launched in 2012 but has got a longer history. It was originally created in 1926 to celebrate the birth of George V’s grand-daughter’s birth, who was to become Queen Elizabeth II. In 2012 Floris re-issued the historical fragrance to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel S01E06 (Mrs. X at the Gaslight)

themarvelousmrsmaisel_s01e06_bornunicorn (1)themarvelousmrsmaisel_s01e06_bornunicorn (6)When Susie Meyerson (Alex Borstein) pays Midge a visit at B. Altman, we are given a perfect product placement moment: a factice bottle of Guerlain Chamade gets its own shot.

guerlain_chamade_bornunicornThere’s a problem, though: the beautiful Pochet et du Courval leaf-shaped bottle shouldn’t be sitting at a department store in 1958, because the Paul Guerlain creation was released only in 1969, 11 years later.

guerlainflaconsabeille_bornunicornWhile Mary (Erin Darke) and Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) are walking through the beauty department, some perfume bottles can be seen on the counter on the left: they’re Madame Rochas by Rochas (created by Guy Robert in 1960) and a flacon abeilles dorées by Guerlain.

How to Get Away with Murder S04E05 (I Love Her)

howtogetawaywithmurder_s04e05_bornunicornavonmesmerizealfredsungshi_bornunicornThere are two perfumes on Bonnie’s dresser: the one in the blue bottle is Avon Mesmerize, a fragrance launched in 1992; the other, with the drop-shaped bottle in the back, is Shi by Alfred Sung, an aquatic white floral perfume created by Ilias Ermenidis and launched in 2000.

Stranger Things S02E08 (The Mind Flayer)

strangerthings_s02e08_bornunicorn-1.pngBilly Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery) is the bad boy par excellence in this season. He hates everybody, is rude to everybody but loves himself. A lot. The glimpse we get of his dressing table reveals interesting products he uses as part of his beauty routine.

He uses the same AquaNet hairspray Kali and Dottie use on Eleven in S02E07.

He also has a bottle of Breckset setting lotion.

The third hair product he has in his bedroom is Alberto styling mousse.

The fragrance he uses is Paco Rabanne Pour Homme after shave, created by Jean Martel and launched in 1973.

esteelauderaramis_bornunicorn

On his dresser there’s also a bottle of Aramis by Estee Lauder, a perfume created by Bernard Chant and launched in 1966. The choice is historically accurate but I feel Aramis is a bit too conservative for a rebel like Billy.

Thanks to Ladiesofthepast for the Paco Rabanne id.

Stranger Things S02E01 (MADMAX)

avonthimblebottle_bornunicornThere’s an Avon cologne in the bathroom at Barb’s house. It’s unclear what cologne it is, since Avon used the same bottle (the thimble one, in this case) for different scents. Elusive, Bird of Paradise and Charisma colognes were all sold in this golden stopper bottle.

Thanks to my friend Jennifer for the id.

Tales of the Unexpected S05E01 (Blue Marigold)

bluemarigold_bornunicorn

talesoftheunexpected_guerlainchamade_bornunicornMyra (Toyah Willcox) is the celebrated face of the Blue Marigold advertising campaign, but she descends into self-destruction when she is told she is unsuitable for the perfume commercials because of her voice. The bottle used for the fictitious perfume is not fictitious at all: it’s Guerlain Chamade!

tvtimes_guerlainchamade_bornunicorn

guerlain_chamade_bornunicornThe balsamic floral perfume was created by Jean-Paul Guerlain in 1969 and was inspired by the novel La chamade by Françoise Sagan. The beautiful leaf-shaped bottle was created by Pochet et du Courval and exclusively used for this fragrance.
