Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s Make-Up Finds (2018)

mulleavysmakeup_bornunicornKate and Laura Mulleavy, the designers behind the fashion brand Rodarte and the talented directors of Woodshock (2017), have just shared their recent beauty finds via Twitter. Their make-up is always pretty minimal, so let’s see what they will be using this spring.

narspowermatte_savethequeen_bornunicorn.jpg

NARS Powermatte lip pigment is shown in two different shades – a dusty mauve (Save the Queen) and a classic red. When it comes to the exact shade, I’m on the fence: it could be the vivid blue red of Starwoman or the red currant of Just Push Play.

morgantaylornailpolish_bornunicornThere’s also a bottle of Morgan Taylor nail polish in a pastel pink shade.

milkmakeup_lipcheekrally_bornunicorn.pngrodinlipbalm_bornunicornPink is a leit-motiv in this picture, as shown by Milk Makeup lip+cheek stick in Rally (mauve with shimmer) and by Rodin lip balm.

lauramercier_tintedmoisturiser_bornunicornNo foundation in this selection, but a tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier.

bobbibrown_pinkglowhighlighter_bornunicorn

The highlighter is Bobbi Brown Pink Glow.

clarins_instantsmooth_bornunicorn.jpgLast but not least, a jar of Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch primer.

I hope the Mulleavys will soon share more beauty finds and more favourites. For example, they love floral perfumes, but people need to know. Details, please 😉

Trent Reznor’s Love for Scented Candles

In 1994 the founder and frontman of Nine Inch Nails expressed his love for scented candles, which – according to him – were infinitely better than drugs.

diptyquecandles_bornunicorn.jpgFast forward to 2014: Reznor was portrayed working in Atticus Ross’ studio. Guess what was sitting next to him… A Diptyque candle! Unfortunately, there’s no way to say what scent it was, but this is the evidence we needed (in case we needed it) that his passion for scented candles is still strong!

Thanks to the lovely girls of Diptyque Detectives for first posting about this.

The frosted glass bottle with a swan on it is something special: the French brand Payot launched Pavlova in 1977 as a homage to the famous Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova, who happened to be the main source of inspiration for Nadia Payot, founder of the brand. This woody/white floral fragrance was actually inspired to a 1922 perfume. No wonder that a swan decorates the bottle: Pavlova performed The Dying Swan, a solo choreographed by Mikhail Fokine to Camille Saint-Saëns’s Le Cygne almost 4,000 times. Furthermore, the ballerina owned a real swan, Jack, whom she loved dearly.

Thanks to my friend Jennifer for the perfume id.

Mr Selfridge S04E01

mrselfridge_s04e01_bornunicorn (3)Kitty’s perfume counter is packed with Jean Patou fragrances. We can see several bottles of Joy and three smaller bottles.jeanpatou_joy_bornunicornOne of the most famous white floral perfumes, Joy was created by Henri Almeras and launched in 1930. jeanpatoucolony_bornunicornColony, launched in 1938, is another creation by Almeras. The bottle originally had a peculiar pineapple shape.

jeanpatoumomentsupreme_bornunicornThe miniature on the left is another Patou perfume, but it’s impossible to tell which. This bottle, with rounded shoulders and stopper, was used for several fragrances. The fourth season of the show is set in 1928, so we can make some assumptions: it could be Amour AmourQue sais je? or Adieu Sagesse (all launched in 1925) or even Chaldee (launched in 1927). The point is that these assumptions are not really correct: Joy is widely shown in this scene, which is historically inaccurate (the perfume was launched in 1930, two years after the events told in the season), so the miniature above could actually contain any Patou perfume, even one launched after 1928.

Joy+Jean+Patou_vintagead_bornunicornLater in the episode, a poster for Joy can be seen. Le parfum roi had a simple bottle decorated with gold leaf and gold thread around the bottle.

After being among the protagonists of the third episode, Marilyn Miglin (Judith Light) is featured in the season finale, too. As a businesswoman incredibly devoted to her job, she never misses her obligations, even when she gets the news that Andrew Cunanan has killed Gianni Versace.

In the scene where she’s working on tv, lots of products of her brand can be seen. Most of them are from the Destiny line.

Finally, the faceted bottle at the top right part of the picture is Destiny Callalily.

marilynmiglin_magicperfume_bornunicorn

Magic is something special. Marilyn explains it’s the fragrance someone like her father (who died when she was young) would give to someone like her mother (who took care of her family by herself) as a love token. The scene is very touching and beautifully emphasizes how positive feelings can still be true, despite the senseless tragedy of this world.
