L’enfer (1994)

Several scenes set in Paul and Nelly’s bedroom reveal that the woman is a fragrance lover. On a dresser by the bathroom door we can see two Guerlain bottles.

One is the flacon chauve souris of Shalimar, a fragrance created by Jacques Guerlain and launched in 1925.

The other is a flacon bouchon coeur, possibly containing Mitsouko, L’Heure Bleue or Fol Arôme. The same bottle can be seen in the couple’s bathroom.

Other two fragrance bottles sit on Nelly’s vanity.

The bottle with white stopper on the left side of the vanity is Clarins Eau Dynamisante, an aromatic citrus fragrance created by Jacques Courtin-Clarins and launched in 1987.

Next to it there’s a bottle of Rochas Eau de Rochas, a citrus aromatic eau de toilette created by Nicolas Mamounas and launched in 1970.

Nelly’s passion for fragrances can be seen in the decor of the room, too: a poster of Le Galion Sortilège is displayed on the wall behind the vanity. This 1954 advert was created by the illustrator Claude Maurel.

Maria (2024)

I was looking forward to watching the latest Pablo Larraín film documenting the last days in the life of Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie) because I *knew* (hoped) some interesting beauty products were in it and I was not disappointed.

The first product I spotted in the scene where Maria is sitting at her vanity is a white jar by Guerlain containing skincare. The exact product is unclear (it could be the Crème Stabilisante, shown in the 1975 advert above, the Collagena or the Crème Magistrale), but the choice is historically accurate, because this packaging was marketed in the mid/late 1970s.

Next, there’s a Dior amphora bottle, originally designed by Fernand Guéry-Colas. This bottle housed different Dior fragrances (Miss Dior, Diorissimo and Diorama), so once again it’s unclear which fragrance sits on la Divina’s vanity.

I was surprised to see a massive flacon chauve souris containing the Guerlain classic Shalimar, a fragrance created in 1925 by Jacques Guerlain. According to online reports, Maria Callas used to wear Chanel No. 5 and Revillon Detchema, but there’s nothing that can beat the impressive presence of this bottle on a film set, so I totally approve of this choice.

Another surprising presence is a box of Madame Rochas, a white floral fragrance created by Guy Robert and launched in 1960. It may not be accurate, if we assume that Callas never wore it, but it surely looks good on her vanity.

Later in the film, Maria sits at another vanity. There’s another flacon chauve souris on it but there’s also a Guerlain zigzag box, first introduced in 1967. Reading the front label is impossible, so its content is unknown.

The Undoing E01 (The Undoing)

There are several fragrance bottles on a dresser in Grace’s bedroom.

Starting from the left: the bottle with pink stopper is Prada Infusion de Rose, launched in 2017.

Right behind it there’s Tiffany & Co. Tiffany, a floral fragrance created by Daniela Andrier and launched in 2017.

Next, the flacon chauve souris of Guerlain Shalimar, originally created by Jacques Guerlain and launched in 1925.

There’s also Hermès Twilly d’Hermès, a white floral fragrance by Christine Nagel launched in 2017.

The short bottle with red stopper in the back is Narciso Rodriguez Narciso Rouge, a musky fragrance created by Nadege le Garlantezec and Sonia Constant and launched in 2018.

Last, the dark tall bottle in the back is Y by Yves Saint Laurent, an aromatic fougère fragrance by Dominique Ropion launched in 2018.

Kung Fu Master! (1988)

There are several Guerlain products in Mary-Jane’s wood-lined bathroom.

The first is a box of Les Météorites pressed-powder pearls sitting on the marble sink counter.

On the wooden shelf by the bath tub there are a flacon chauve souris of Shalimar and a flacon abeilles of Eau Impériale.

Ann Miller’s Vanity (1945)

Checking the dressing tables and vanities of celebrities is always thrilling, especially when they include lots of cosmetics or fragrance bottles. The latter is certainly the case of this 1945 portrait of the American actress and dancer Ann Miller.

Here is what I have identified. Starting from the left: there are two bottles of D’Orsay Intoxication, a chypre floral fragrance launched in 1938.

There’s also a flacon bouchon coeur by Guerlain, possibly containing Mitsouko, a chypre fruity fragrance by Jacques Guerlain launched in 1919.

Impossible not to spot the beautiful bottle of Schiaparelli Shocking under a glass dome. This amber floral creation by Jean Carles was launched in 1937.

Right in front of the mirror there are two flacons chauve souris by Guerlain containing Shalimar, a Jacques Guerlain creation launched in 1925.

On the same side of the table there’s Worth Je Reviens eau de cologne. The eau de toilette version of this floral aldehyde fragrance created by Maurice Blanchet was launched in 1932.

Last, we can see the fluted bottle of an eau de cologne by Jean Patou.

Mad Men S03E02 (Love Among the Ruins)

There’s Guerlain Shalimar in the beautiful flacon chauve souris on a dressing table in Peggy Olson’s bedroom.

Created in 1925 by Jacques Guerlain, it’s undeniably one of the most famous perfumes of all times. You may remember another protagonist of the TV show (Joan Holloway, played by Christina Hendricks) wears the same perfume.

The Women (1939)

When Sylvia (Rosalind Russell) and Edith (Phyllis Povah) decide to act on the infidelity rumours about their friend Mary’s husband, they pay a visit to the cosmetic department at Black’s Fifth Avenue: there, they intend to meet the alleged mistress, Crystal Allen (Joan Crawford).

When they stop at a perfume counter, some interesting bottles can be seen.

On the mirrored table on the right there’s a factice flacon chauve souris of Guerlain Shalimar, the Jacques Guerlain masterpiece launched in 1925.

In the glass cabinet behind the shop assistant there’s a Guerlain flacon montre containing an eau de cologne.
