American Horror Story S08E06 (Return to Murder House)

americanhorrorstory_s08e06_bornunicorn (2)Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange) is a character from Season 1 whose return in Season 8 has been much awaited and anticipated. She was “born to be a mother”, as shown by her decision to commit suicide in the Murder House, so as to spend eternity with her beloved children (who already live in the house). She gives lots of importance to appearances and to her own look, so it’s not surprising that she re-applies her lipstick before dying.  The shade she’s using is a nude beige, reminiscent of the 1960s/1970s (decades in which she was young and desirable).

When Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange) announces she will move to Hollywood for a fresh start, her “freaks” give her a precious gift: a set of Westmores of Hollywood beauty products.

The set is made of three golden bottles and a round box. The gold bottle on the left surely contains body powder, while the box contains face powder. The three bottles look like factices, while the box is emblazoned with the Westmore logo.

Ethel Darling (Kathy Bates) explains these products are “the best” and she’s right. The brand was founded in 1917 by George Westmore, an English wigmaker who established Hollywood’s first make-up department; he became the forefather of a dynasty of make-up artists who left an indelible mark in the history of cinema.

While Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) is at the Cedars-Sinai hospital, George Cukor (John Rubinstein) pays her a visit. While they’re talking, she puts on some pink lipstick. It’s by Bésame Cosmetics: the shade looks like Dusty Rose.

There are other Bésame Cosmetics products by the washbasin in her hospital room – a powder compact, a cream rouge, a brightening face powder and a travel lip brush.

Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) is on the set of Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte by Robert Aldrich: her make-up stylist is showing her some false eyelashes. Bésame Cosmetics mascara brush set – which includes a mascara and a liner brush – can be seen.

The lipstick on her dressing table is Dusty Rose by Bésame Cosmetics, a natural pink shade inspired to a 1969 shade.

She’s getting ready for the Oscars 1963 and she picks a perfume bottle among many of them. The glass bottle with the yellow pump is from the Bésame Cosmetics Decades of Fragrance collection. I wonder what perfume Joan wore: the 1960s floral chypre or a fragrance inspired to a previous decade?

There are two boxes of Max Factor Pan Stik creamy foundation and a make-up brush on Joan Crawford’s dressing table. I think the brush is the long-hair finishing powder brush by Bésame Cosmetics: the gold handle is the same, but the brand name and the red flowers have been removed from it.
