Debbie (Betty Gilpin) visits Bobby (Kevin Cahoon) in his dressing room because she’s got an offer: she wants to produce the annual AIDS fundraiser he’s organising.
His dressing table is quite busy: on it I’ve spotted Sure deodorant and Fabergè Aquanet super-hold hairspray.
The silver ball-topped perfume bottle just under Debbie’s wrist is kind of obsessing me: my instinct says it’s by Avon, but I haven’t been able to find any evidence. Any ideas about it?
Bash Howard (Chris Lowell), heir to the Howard Foods business empire and producer of GLOW, is one of my favourite characters of the show, so a scene set in his bathroom was very much welcomed by yours truly, who couldn’t wait to take a look at his beauty products.
First on the left of the marble top, there’s a bottle of Ralph Lauren Polo, the aromatic fragrance created in 1978 by Carlos Benaim. No surprises here: Bash is a flamboyant ring announcer and commentator, but he’s very conservative when it comes to appearances. A relatively traditional eau de toilette like Polo suits his character.
His hairstyle is very distinctive and trendy, so it’s obvious there are lots of styling products. There are two bottles of Vitalis hair tonic and an array of L’Oreal Studio Line items (hairspray, two mousses and gel). The choice of using Studio Line is excellent: this hairstyling line was very popular in the 1980s! I liked using Gelling Curls.
The two hairsprays on Debbie’s dressing table are VO5 Crystal Clear and Aquanet Super Hold (old lettering).
The yellow jar near the hairspray cans is Skin Softener body lotion of Avon Timeless.
There’s a can of Aquanet unscented super-hold hairspray on Bobby’s dressing table. The silver-ish bottle on its left reminds me of Halston perfume, which would be really appropriate, since Bobby has just done a beautiful performance in drag as Liza Minnelli, one of the most famous Halstonettes.
There’s Ban roll-on deodorant in Sam’s bathroom.
Debbie (Betty Gilpin) keeps VO5 Crystal Clear hairspray and a jar of Noxzema skin cream on her dressing table.
The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling are having a minute of silence in their dressing room, just before their debut at the Fan-Tan Casino in Las Vegas: they are commemorating the explosion of the NASA space shuttle Challenger, which happened on January 28th, 1986.
On one of the tables in the room there’s a bottle of Clairol Final Net hairspray.
When Big Kurt Jackson and Chavo barge into the girls’ dressing room to complain about Carmen’s moves (stolen from her brothers), Debbie (Betty Gilpin) acts as peacemaker. In the screencap above, Tammé (Kia Stevens) is holding a can of Aqua Net hairspray; on the glass shelf by the washbasin there’s Maybelline Great Lash mascara.
After being featured several times in S01, the super-hold version of Aqua Net hairspray gets namechecked. This happens during a match between Melrose (Jackie Tohn) and the Beatdown Biddies: Melanie uses it a weapon.
Melrose (Jackie Tohn) is the protagonist of the video Makeover, which features most of the G.L.O.W. girls, too. On her vanity table there’s a bottle of Oil of Olay.
There’s also a can of Aqua Net hairspray.
