Female Perversions (1996)

Eve (Tilda Swinton) goes shopping for make-up at a NARS counter.

In the glass cabinet several bottles of liquid foundation and eye-shadow compacts can be seen.

In the screencap above the proportions are a bit tricky, so I can’t decide if the compacts contain single or duo eye-shadows. I remember single eye-shadows in the old rubberised packaging were really tiny, while the duo eye-shadow compact had the same size as the blush compacts. Probably these are duos.

Eve is fascinated by the lipstick worn by the sales assistant and she asks to try it on.

This film was released in 1996, two years after François Nars launched his lipstick in 12 shades at the beauty counter of Barneys New York. The darkest of these shades were Scarlet Empress and Shanghai Express, so it’s reasonable to assume the exact shade featured in the film is one of the two.

My knowledge as a former NARS-issist, though, makes me think of yet another dark shade of red – Fire Down Below. I haven’t found any information about the year in which it was first launched. If it happened between 1994 and 1996, this could be another option for the lipstick seen in the film.

La Bête (2023)

The golden compact Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux) is holding is Poiret Métier de Poiret Poudre Mono.

The red lipstick is by the same brand. I believe it’s Rouge Poiret, but it could also be Rouge Raffiné: the two lipsticks have the same case.

Featuring cosmetics by the historical French maison makes total sense: when the protagonist is shown living a past life in 1910 Paris, she’s a famous pianist. Paul Poiret introduces himself to her and offers to dress her in his own designs. Gabrielle obviously accepts.

Blood Simple (1984)

Abby’s bag contains some cosmetics. Among them there’s Pond’s Angel Face pressed powder in an aqua compact decorated with a golden flower crown.

The white compact is much more mysterious, even though the back label sticker is fully visible. It reads “Montage powder blush” and the colour is Soft Red. I am not familiar with the brand and I haven’t found any further information online.

Vita da cani (1950)

Nino (Aldo Fabrizi) wants to propose to Rita (Gina Lollobrigida) and invites her to visit Como with him. He’s dressed elegantly and his outfit includes a scented handkerchief!

The fragrance of choice is none other than Lanvin Arpège, shown above in the boule noire with raspberry stopper in an advert from 1950, year in which the film was released.

L’Été Dernier (2023)

Mina (Clotilde Courau) is Anne’s sister. She’s a nail artist, too: the scene of this conversation between them takes place in her salon.

The nail polishes she uses are by two American brands – Color Club (old packaging, as we can see from the old logo printed on the bottles) and OPI.

The shade Mina has selected for Anne is a pale pink by OPI.

Back to Black (2024)

In the aftermath of the death of Amy’s grandmother Cynthia, the singer (Marisa Abela) sits at her vanity. This is an interesting scene because we get to see some of the beauty products and perfumes used by Cynthia, one of the main inspirations behind Amy’s music tastes and unique look.

The bottle with a triangular shape (a design by Robert Granai) is Guerlain Champs-Elysées, a floral fragrance originally created by Jacques Guerlain in 1904 and reintroduced in 1996.

The spray can Amy is holding is L’Oreal Elnett hairspray.

There’s also a bottle of Estée Lauder Youth Dew, a warm spicy fragrance created by Josephine Catapano and launched in 1953.
