Opening Night (1977)

vlcsnap-2018-01-16-11h11m09s788 (2)One of the most famous scenes of the film is Myrtle Gordon (Gena Rowlands) putting on her signature lip colour just before hitting the stage. As you can see, she’s not holding a lipstick but a jumbo crayon. In the 1970s several beauty brands released make-up in crayon form, including Max Factor, which created the Pure Magic line.

maxfactorpuremagiccheekcrayon_bornunicornMyrtle uses the cheek crayon, bigger than the lip one. It would be interesting to know the exact shade she’s wearing, a beautiful bright pink shade.

Thanks to the invaluable help of Hillary, the curator of the Makeup Museum, for the id.

Opening Night (1977)

piguetfracaseaudetoilette_bornunicornI am not surprised to see a big bottle of Robert Piguet Fracas eau de toilette on Myrtle Gordon’s dressing table. The troubled actress has a strong personality, what it takes to wear a larger-than-life white floral triumph like Fracas, created in 1948 by Germaine Cellier. The bottle has a white stopper, instead of the traditional black one.
